Gritty City

Gritty City is a love letter to Winnipeg. Born out of the mind of author Nigel Webber, "Gritty City: An Oral History of Winnipeg Hip-Hop Music 1980-2005" documents the forgotten and untold stories of how hip-hop music and culture came to Winnipeg and thrived in our prairie city.

Written over the course of four and a half years and published in summer 2024, "Gritty City" is like hanging out with your uncles and older cousins, listening to them reminisce about their glory days. Grab a copy of "GC" to learn about Winnipeg rappers being nominated for Grammys, becoming stars on Much Music, but also struggling through the city's entrenched racism prevalent in the 1980s.
